Tips for Effective Advocacy
- BUILD RELATIONSHIPS: Get to know the lawmaker(s) before your issue “blows up.” It is easier to ask for their help and support if they already know you.
- EDUCATION: Educate yourself. You do not need to be an expert, but you should have a clear understanding of the issue. Information equals more effective advocacy.
- BUILD SUPPORT: Find others who care about the issue. Always look for established organizations or groups that are likeminded. Host educational forums with your community on issues of importance to you.
- INTEGRITY: Don’t fake an answer to a lawmaker’s question. If you don’t know, tell them you will follow up with additional information. Make sure you do!
- COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY:
— Explain your opinion, briefly.
— State your expectation of them as your representative (e.g. Please vote yes!).
— When writing, sign your name and include your address.
— Tell them you will be paying attention to the issue and their vote. - MAKE IT PERSONAL: Tell the story that makes the issue personal for you.
- SHOW UP: Attend virtual legislative forums for your lawmakers. Send them an email after the forum to let them know you attended.
- FAITH MATTERS: If applicable, include in your correspondence or conversation that you are talking with them about the issue as a person of faith. Lawmakers need to understand that there is a spectrum of faith perspectives on many issues.
